My 3 year old son and I made our way to Houston, Texas for the Grace Hopper Celebration 2015. I am not sure which one of us was more exited. He’s been looking forward to this trip since I told him about it. It was not his first time flying, but he sure enjoys being up in the air like The Little Einsteins and rocket from his favorite cartoon. We enjoyed the flights; the only sad thing that day was that we did not make it on time to attend the Scholar Meet and Greet Reception as we planned. When we arrived in Dallas, upon boarding the second flight we waited for over half an hour for American Airlines to fix a technical issue, finally, everyone had to de-board the aircraft and walk to another side of the airport to a new gate and wait for a different aircraft. Well, better safe than sorry.

We arrived at our Hotel, the Hyatt Regency and our doorman Fabio greeted us, check in was fast. A few minutes later our luggage were sent up to our room. We made a quick trip downtown, ate then went for a good night sleep.

GHC15 Day 1

One of the great thing about GHC is the free childcare offered to all participant, I drop off my son, registered, got my meal card and headed straight to the Opening GHC Keynote… OMG! That room was PACKED. Thousands of people in a single room for the same cause: #OurTimeToLoad.

Let’s not talk about the line to get something to eat at Starbucks. For such a big event, the location should have more food vendors.

I spent most of the day working on an Open source project with a team of about 15 people divide into 3 task groups: app development, web design, and back end. I was part of the back end group. Our project was to work on finding a solution to help the increase participation of Kenyan women in politics using technology.
We had a fun day creating a database from scratch using MySQL, drawing diagrams and so on… Main setback for most people was the wireless connection.

I took a small break from open source to attend the Scholar Luncheon hosted by Apple. Was a little disappointed that my seat did not have one of the 8 stickers hidden under the participants’ seats that lead to 8 lucky Apple Watch winners. That was so great.

I decided not to talk to recruiters on that day, but rather did my swags collection, checked out the booths at the career fair, and identify the ones I will be visiting today. So many cool stuff, just take a look.

That’s it; I have to get ready to head to the convention now. Main thing I am looking forward to today is the career fair. Too many exiting things are waiting for me. Come back tomorrow for an update.
